From Sandra Whiles, Former Chief Exec Blaby District Council.

“I have worked with Debbie in several roles over the years. These include the work she has done developing Rosliston Forestry Centre into a thriving and profitable attraction and her work as project manager on the Newhall Community Mapping project.

“Debbie's work on the Newhall Project was vital to its success. Debbie worked with local people, service providers, businesses and the voluntary sector to develop and deliver sustainable projects which changed lives in this deprived community.

“Debbie is a joy to work with. She has very strong organisational, negotiation and people skills. She has the magic touch which builds confidence, supports people to succeed for themselves and delivers.”

From Stuart Batchelor, Director Active Derbyshire.

Rosliston Forestry Centre

Wayne and Debbie Chesterman have lived and breathed Rosliston Forestry Centre for 20 years developing it into one of the National Forests premier visitor centres. They have proved to be dynamic and entrepreneurial business people whilst remaining community orientated and ensuring a caring attitude to visitors and the environment.

“Over the many years they have built up the Centre they have retained their energy and enthusiasm and always worked closely and in partnership with South Derbyshire District Council and the Forestry Commission. Funding opportunities have been maximised to the full and excellent service delivery continued even during times of financial constraint.”

Get Active In The Forest

“Debbie Chesterman has led the ‘Get Active In The Forest’ project since 2006 and before that the Walking The Way To Health initiative. These two services have been at the forefront of physical activity outreach schemes and achieved national accreditations as well as Get Active in the Forest winning the 2008 Best Sports Lottery Project Award.

“Debbie has great skill in enthusing volunteers and directed a committed workforce to get physically inactive people into exercise. I would recommend Debbie to any organisation who want to commission effective and successful participation interventions.”

From Mary Hague, Senior Public Health Strategy Manager, Derbyshire County Council

“I have worked with Debbie for over 10 years, observing her enthusiasm and passion for generating and leading projects to support a person’s health and well-being.

“Over the years Debbie has managed various projects through partnership with a range of organisations and importantly working with local people themselves to ensure the project meets their health needs.

“Debbie understands the value of a healthy lifestyle choice and its strong impact on a person’s health and well-being both physical and mental health. Some examples include her leadership of a Walking for Health programme to support people with a health need towards improved confidence and self-esteem to enjoy walks as a fun way into becoming more active.

“Health impact for people participating has not only included improvements to fitness and weight but also from a mental well-being arena with people making friends and gaining in self-confidence. This project also supported people to complete training and go onto volunteer as walk leaders themselves.

“Teddy walks has been a project aimed at young families including families who experience loneliness and isolation. Walks are risk assessed and managed under national guidance to ensure maximum health impact and value for money for commissioners.

“Debbie has a background working in a NHS environment and this has enabled her principles of particularly reaching those who are most vulnerable to poor health outcomes such as people with a physical disability or a learning disability, people living with mental ill health, people who live with low income and people living with other barriers to good health. Debbie works with multiple partners – NHS practitioners, council staff and the voluntary sector to minimise duplication of resources and to share expertise.

“Debbie’s work exemplifies the importance of starting with people and their needs, working with them through the use of physical activity opportunities and the use of the outdoors towards healthier choices and overall better health and well-being.”
